Phil Gabriel's solution to Skype problems..
As a longtime user of Skype, I have been very happy with the service. It has allowed me to keep in contact with friends and family from over a dozen different countries at a very good price.
However, Skype is not perfect; I recently had Skype problems with logging in to my account. The login screen would appear for about ten seconds, and then the program would crash. Re-launching the program had the same results. A reboot of my computer did nothing to clear the fault.
A visit to the website showed that Skype is aware of the Skype problems and has provided two repair methods. The first, an update to Skype software, did not work for me. The second method, which involves finding and deleting a bad XML file, did repair the problem.
A bit of research shows that the first method did not work because an update, using Skype’s link, did not remove the bad file. Since it remains in place, the fault is not repaired. The solution (if you want to use the automatic method) is to remove your Skype installation from the Control Panel before re-installing the Skype software.

I prefer the manual method. A handy step-by-step procedure is provided on Skype’s Heartbeat page:
